How to Master Your First Photoshoot as a Blogger

By on August 3, 2017

Hello ladies! I missed you all so much. I just had my first photoshoot! I researched out the wazoo about everything I needed to know. I found so many helpful tips, and I also learned so much during the photoshoot as well. I am pleased to share it with you all to potentially help you too!

1. Research Different Photoshoot Poses

Pinterest is your best friend when it comes to looking up different poses to use. I found so many cute and chic poses that I felt prepared when my photographer asked me to change my pose.

2. Mentally Prepare Yourself for Bystanders

If you’re taking professional photos outside of your home, be prepared for people to stare at your photoshoot. People love to be nosey, it’s in our nature, so just accept that it’s going to happen. Before your first photoshoot tell yourself that you look gorgeous and they’re staring because of that. Even if that isn’t why they’re staring, you just have to believe that’s why they are.

3. Pick Out an Outfit that Flatters You

Everyone and their mama knows that the camera adds ten pounds, so make sure that you pick out an outfit that accentuates your best features. Whatever body type you have, google what fits of clothing look best your figure!

4. Have Fun on Your First Photoshoot

Your pictures will turn out much better if you have fun and keep it light-hearted! Your photographer will thank you for it later. Take a peek of my first photoshoot below!!

The Best Restaurant in Charlotte for Fashionistas to Meet-Up

By on June 3, 2017

So as you all know I’ve been a blogger for a total of 5 months now… woah. I feel like just yesterday I was trying to figure out my website (still am) and so nervous to begin! I was blogging alone for a few months until I discovered the amazing website called Style Collective. I cannot begin to tell you how happy I was to finally find a community of fashion bloggers that went above and beyond to help each other grow. Through joining the community, I’ve met a plethora of amazing fashionistas that I’m now great friends with. The creator of the site, Annie, launched a podcast and I volunteered to be a regional leader for Charlotte to plan the celebration event. We all worked hard to make sure all the things were in line and make sure everyone who was invited knew exactly where to go!

The Vivace Experience

Then we figured out the place that we would hold the event and I was so happy to find out that it would be at Vivace in uptown. I had never been there, but people had raved about their food before so I was pumped. When the event started they placed us outside under the string lit umbrellas in the corner! Vivace knew exactly where to place us just in case we created too much commotion. Also the skyline of Charlotte is right behind the restaurant! We took SO many photos because why not?! Needless to say, it was the perfect place for fashionistas to gather and uplift one another. Eben did a fantastic job shooting us and here some of the pictures she took so you guys can see all the fun!

Good Food Makes Us Happy

So as you can tell the food was absolutely delicious! What Chef Caputo served us was so incredible and here are the deets:

  1. Watermelon Cubes, Vin Cotto with shaved pecorino cheese
  2. Smoked Buratta, heirloom tomatoes with lemon jam
  3. Grilled Lamb Porterhouse Farro & Parsley Salad
  4. Gorgonzola BomboliniΒ

The Blogs Who Made This Event AMAZING

Here are the blogs that attended the podcast launch party:

This event was just the cherry on top of a great five months of blogging and learning as much as I can. I’ve gotten such great feedback from you ladies and I can’t wait to continue giving you your weekly dose of fashion, girly needs. Until next time my fashionistas πŸ™‚

How to Land a Job in the Fashion Industry & Where to Start

By on May 17, 2017

So you’re a senior in college and you’ve just graduated with a degree in fashion merchandising and have no clue where to begin **cough THAT WAS ME cough**. You have an older cousin who is a successful fashion buyer for Ross but she’s busy living her life, and your friends aren’t interested in fashion. Where do you look and how do you actually get the job you’re being interviewed for? To all my fashionistas out there who are freaking out, I’m here to save the day. If you follow my tips below, trust and believe you’ll get that position in the fashion industry!!

Utilize Your School’s Career Center

There are so many alumni at your school I can 100% guarantee that you can be connected with someone who is already successful in the section of the fashion industry you want! Make sure that when you’re finally connected with an alumni that you prove to them that you’re worthy of their time and effort. Always be punctual. The career center may have job openings that you can apply to as well!

Use Social Media to Your Advantage

There is absolutely no excuse for you not to know everything about the position you’re applying for. Do your research. On top of that reach out to people in the industry on social media and show them that you’re worthy of their time. I’ve heard that countless hiring managers will give internships to people they’ve met and talked to online.

Do Something Unique to Put on Your Resume

People love uniqueness. Think of something that you can do to set yourself apart from your competition, for example, make clothes for the poor or tutor a school aged girl in fashion! It’s very important to have these unique things so that you can be amazing off AND on paper!

Stop Being Afraid to Network

Ladies, you need to network! That is the ultimate way to make it in this industry. It’s who you know, and whether you like it or not that’s the way to go. DM your favorite fashion bloggers and ask for an informational interview, or ask one of your local shops who they know in the industry. Being sweet & polite goes a long way with people. Make sure that you’re organized and have questions prepared, it shows your passion.

Travel to New Cities

Take a day trip to Chicago or another city near you and talk to managers in all the small stores you see! Ask them how they got there and if they have any tips to be successful in the industry. You’ll be surprised what people know, and you’ll have a new contact in your contact list! Put yourself out there and show them that you’re confident in the skills you possess! Who knows, maybe one of them will know of a job opening that’s not on the internet that’d you be perfect for!

Dress to Impress

Extra Petite

Image is everything! Oh my goodness I cannot stress this enough. Invest in yourself. Make sure you’re consistently up to date with trends and always be yourself in your outfits! The fashion industry is relies heavily on image. Just think, if the hiring manager saw you and LOVED your blazer, she’ll think of it later on which means you’re one step closer to getting that job!

Go Above & Beyond for the Fashion Industry

Send out thank you letters or emails that truly embody who you are as a person and why they have to have you on their team. Arrive 15 minutes early, and be super friendly to each person you meet, even if they’re your competition! Complement each employee you happen to meet and show them that they’d love to work with you. By going above and beyond your competition you’ll land that job in the fashion industry for sure and as a result you’ll be able to help others do the same.

You are now set up for success, if any of you guys have questions or want me to help with cover letters and resumes, leave a comment or email me!

With Love,

Alaya

15 Clothing Hacks That Will Blow Your Mind

By on February 12, 2017

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

I have been obsessed with clothing hacks for as long as I can remember! Sometimes clothes can be so frustrating and so I’ve compiled a list of the best clothing hacks out there! They are guaranteed to blow your mind! πŸ˜‰

1. The Neck Measurement Hack

To see if a pair of jeans will fit without trying them on, all you have to do is take the waist of the jeans and see if they will fit around your entire neck. It has been proven that the circumference of your neck is more than likely equal to the front of your waist. So the next time you’re out shopping but don’t have the time to try it on, try this hack to save time!

2. Get Rid of Pesky Pilling Using a Razor

There are certain fabrics that tend to pill (polyester), so if you find yourself frustrated at piece of clothing you once loved but it has begun to pill I have the solution! You can use an old razor to shave them away. It’s very simple, just be extra careful so that you will not cut through the fabric!

3. Dish Soap will Remove Oil Stains

I don’t know about you but I used wash my favorite shirt a whole bunch of times and it still had the oil stain on it. However, when I used regular dish soap to spot treat it, it came right out! I almost cried LOL. So, this hack is a life saver if you accidentally dropped some oily food on your shirt and need it to come out without spending a dime!

4. Get Rid of Wrinkles Fast with your Dryer

If you are in a hurry in the morning and don’t feel like whipping out your ironing table and iron. Just throw the article of clothing in the dryer for ten minutes while you do your hair or take a shower. When you’re done, your clothing will be wrinkle free and warm! πŸ˜‰

5. A Dryer Sheet will Remove Deodorant Stains

Whenever I throw on a form fitting dress or t-shirt I almost always get some of my deodorant on it. I learned a few years ago that all you have to do is grab a dryer sheet and rub it on the stain until it comes off. It even makes your clothes smell 10x better!

6. Roll Clothing in your Dresser for Easy Access

I used to just fold my clothes in small piles and put them in my drawer. However, I always took forever to find tops or bottoms because you can only see the top shirt or pant! So one of my best friends told me that she rolls her clothes so that she can see all of her options easily! Ever since that amazing tip I can find everything I need in my drawers way quicker!

7. Use a Hair Straightener to Iron your Collar

This tip saves me so much time it’s ridiculous! After I’m done straightening my hair, I turn down the heat a little, wipe off the inside with a dry wash cloth, and iron down my collar! It’s so easy and works quickly!

8. Shaving Cream Removes Makeup Stains

This hack saves my life every day! I got into a car accident a few years ago and the air bag burned my chest! πŸ™ So I apply make up to cover up the small scars that are still there. Now as you can probably guess my makeup gets on my clothes each time. Using shaving cream is so easy and it works quickly! I do it just before I throw it in the wash and it comes out just like new!

9. Hairspray Prevents Runs in Stockings

I am a clumsy girl! I just can’t help but to mess something up, my day wouldn’t be complete unless I spilled something or ruined something. So this hack helps me so much. Whenever I have an event where I need to dress up a little, I lightly spray hairspray on my tights, to make sure I don’t create a run. It works every time!

10. Cover a Scuff on Your Shoes with Nail Polish

We all have that pair of shoes that would be perfect if we could just remove that annoying scuff. Well, I have the fix! Buy nail polish that matches the color of your shoes and voila, you’ve fixed the problem. No one will be able to tell that you had a scuff to begin with! This is one of my favorite hacks!

11. Use a Paper Clip and Thread to Zip Up a Dress

I lived alone my junior year of college, and I remember before my formal date party for my sorority I had no way of zipping up my dress. I ran outside and asked the first person I saw to zip it up, it just happened to be a cable guy haha! I’m sure I made his day πŸ˜‰ After that experience I asked around how other girls zip up their dresses when they’re alone. The consensus was tying a long piece of string to a paper clip, attaching the clip to the zipper, then using the string to pull it up! This hack is perfect for the independent woman!

12. Use the Tape Hack when putting on a Bracelet

Putting on a bracelet by yourself can be frustrating, because it will just keep falling off your wrist due to nothing holding the other side down. Using a piece of tape will hold the top of the bracelet down so that you can easily connect the bracelet together.

13. Use a Panty-Liner to Block Sweat Stains

If you are going to a place where you know it’s going to be hot like a club or dance class, this hack will change everything! Just simply apply a panty-liner to the armpit of the top you’re going to wear, and you will be safe from those embarrassing sweat stains! Just be sure if you wear a white top, you can’t see the panty-liner through the shirt.

14. Duct Tape Can Hold up your Twins

Kim Kardashian slayed my life when she said gave us her tip with using duct tape. Whenever you want to wear a very deep V shirt or dress but wearing a bra is not an option, use duct tape to hold them bad boys up!! Make sure you clean the area you are applying duct tape to, and cover your nipples with tissue. Walk around and dance to make sure that your tape is holding them up perfectly. Now you can wear that sexy dress and have a perky chest too!

15. Pocket Size Can Affect Your Butt Size

I have used this hack since I was 13, I’m not joking. LOL! If you wear jeans with big pockets your butt is going to look smaller, so if you’re looking to make the appearance of your butt to look slimmer, buy that type of jean. If you’re looking to make your butt look bigger, look for pants that either have no pockets or pockets that are smaller and higher up. This will make your butt look perkier and bigger!

If you have any hacks that you love to use, comment below! I’d love to hear them! πŸ™‚

5 Accessories Every Fashionista Should Have In Their Wardrobe

By on January 3, 2017

  • Creative Studs

When I say creative studs, I mean studs that are a modern twist on a classic! For example, studs that have a pretty pearl on the front and then have a back that wraps around to the front with a diamond. Every fashionista should have a pair because it goes perfectly with a chill day outfit. Wear your hair in top bun or pony and let your earrings show everyone you’ve got style even when you’re not trying.

  • Lace choker

Yes of course chokers are in and people are buying them up like crazy! However, which one is the staple that you should most certainly have? A lace choker! Getting one in a neutral color is perfect so that you can wear it with multiple outfits. I know what you’re thinking, “Why lace?”, because everyone and their mama either has a velvet or a wrap choker that’s why! YOU are a fashionista, you go against the current! Now the other styles are super cute but they aren’t a staple accessory, and the lace choker can make any outfit a fashion statement.

  • Stackable Rings

This is for all the boho fashionistas out there! Create a collection of boho stackable rings that have moons, suns etc. or just plain metal that you can mix and match whenever you please! This is great for a night on the town and you want to show off your ethereal, eclectic side.

  • Unique Hair Clips

This can include a gold bar hair clip, a geometric shape clip, or anything that’s out of the ordinary. I love wearing my gold bar hair clip when it’s a muggy day out, so that I can pull my hair back quickly and still show off my style!

  • Statement Watch

Whether it be a Kate Spade watch or a Michael Kors it just has to scream your personality! I have a blush colored coach watch that my aunt gave me, and I think every fashionista should have one. It doesn’t even have to be name brand, just make sure it’s amazing, like you. πŸ˜‰

Do you have any questions or suggestions? Make sure to comment below, I’d love to hear from you!

With Love,

Alaya
